Activity and pending transactions

The Activity note says when the address last took part in a transaction. The Pending note appears when the report sees a nonzero incoming or outgoing unconfirmed balance for the address. A transaction is unconfirmed until it has been included in a block.

What the notes say

What it means

Activity is the time since the last transaction in or out, whatever its size. Quiet means more than three months, dormant more than a year. Dormant addresses are common: long-term savings, old mining rewards, keys that were lost. The chain cannot tell which, and neither can this site.

A pending transaction is waiting in the network's queue until a miner includes it in a block. That usually takes minutes, longer when the network is busy or the fee is low. While it waits, an incoming amount is not part of the confirmed balance yet, and an outgoing one can still take a while to settle.

What it does not mean

Dormant does not mean abandoned or lost. Quiet is not a warning about the funds. Pending does not mean failed, and there is no guaranteed confirmation time. An unconfirmed transaction may confirm later, be replaced, or be dropped by a node. Its disappearance from one node does not prove that it can never confirm.

What you can do

If you watch the address, refresh the report. The notes update when the report receives newer data. If you are waiting for a payment, it counts once it is confirmed, and the report shows it as pending until then.

Common questions

How long does a confirmation take?

A new block arrives about every ten minutes on average. A transaction with an ordinary fee is usually in one of the next few blocks. With a low fee during a busy period it can wait hours or days.

What does the number of confirmations mean?

Each block added after the one that holds the transaction counts as one more confirmation. Many services treat a payment as final after a few confirmations.

Why is the Activity date different from what my wallet shows?

A wallet uses many addresses, and this note describes one of them. See why one address is not a whole wallet.
